It’s time for summer reading!
  • Conceiving Parenthood by my beloved professor Dr. Amy Laura Hall; here’s the description: “Her disturbing finding is that mainline Protestantism is complicit in the history and development of reproductive biotechnology.  Through analysis of nearly 150 images of the family in the mainstream media in the twentieth century, Hall argues that, by downplaying the gratuity of grace, middle-class Protestants have, with American culture at large, implicitly endorsed the idea of justification through responsibly planned procreation.  A tradition that should have welcomed all persons equally has instead fostered a culture of ‘carefully delineated, racially encoded domesticity.  . . . Her goal, however, is not simply to startle readers but to encourage new conversations within communities of faith–conversations enabling individuals, couples, congregations, even entire neighborhoods to conceive of parenthood in ways that make room for families and children who are deemed to be outside the proper purview of the right sorts of families.”
  • Saint Maybe by Anne Tyler
  • Imperfect Birds by Anne Lamotte
  • Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof–”the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women’s potential.” Can’t wait to think about this, chew on it, think through it theologically!
  • Raney by Clyde Edgerton.  A hilarious, honest novel about newlyweds recommended by Dr. Hall.
  • The Narrative of Sojourner Truth
  • The Mystery of Marriage by Mike Mason–courtesy of our sweet friends Blake and Erin
  • Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weshler, MPH–yeah…things I like and don’t like, but lots of things I’m glad I’m learning
  • The Valley of Vision. A collection of Puritan prayers.

And the list of books I want to read keeps getting longer…

I really want to read Half the Sky, Kristof is one of my favorite NY Times columnists. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts! My sister really liked Taking Charge of Your Fertility…she took charge and baby is here! :)

    Miss you.
